General election – latest: Tory data chief Nick Mason investigated for alleged betting on poll date

Tory election betting investigation: 'Totally unacceptable' if rules not followed, says Welsh secretary

The Conservative Party's head of data has become the fourth person from the party to be investigated over alleged betting on the date of the general election, according to the PA news agency.

Nick Mason has taken time off work after becoming the latest Conservative to be investigated by the Gambling Commission for allegedly betting on the election timetable before the date was announced.

The latest allegations were published by The Sunday Times, which claimed dozens of bets had been placed with potential winnings worth thousands of pounds. A spokesperson for the official told the newspaper he denied any wrongdoing.

The revelations are a further blow to Rishi Sunak's hopes of reviving the Conservative election campaign after three other Tory figures were implicated in the scandal.

They are Craig Williams, Mr Sunak's parliamentary private secretary in Montgomeryshire, Laura Saunders, in north-west Bristol, and her husband Tony Lee, the party's campaign manager.

Before this latest revelation, Michael Gove suggested the scandal was proving as damaging as partygate, adding: “It looks like a rule to them and a rule to us. »

“Sunak must personally intervene to order a Cabinet Office investigation and suspend everyone under investigation by the Gambling Commission.

“People are fed up with this sleaze. Day after day, hour after hour, the Conservative government is getting more and more bogged down in this situation.

Priti Patel accuses Labor of trying to mislead the electorate

Dame Priti Patel said the Conservative Party should “always promote” low taxes.

The former interior minister said the Conservatives must always promote an environment in which “the country's entrepreneurs and wealth creators” could flourish.

She claimed voters “should not be fooled” by Sir Keir Starmer and shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves over their promises to prioritize “wealth creation”.

“It’s just a glossy veneer and a smokescreen that hides their plans to tax businesses, markets and investments to pay for their bankrupt policies,” she said.

New poll suggests 'truly historic' election victory for Labor

A new poll predicts Labor is on the verge of a “truly historic” general election victory.

Pollster Savanta, in an exclusive survey for The telegraphshowed Labor on 42 percent (up two points), the Conservatives on 19 percent and Reform on 16 percent (up two).

This is the third consecutive poll in which the Reform Party has achieved its highest share in a Savanta poll since the party's official creation in January 2021.

Emma Levin, associate director of Savanta, said: “Our research suggests we could be watching the collapse of the Conservative Party in real time. This is the lowest conservative vote share ever recorded in a Savanta poll, the third poll in a row.

“This is partly because Reform UK continues to make gains, at their highest level in a Savanta poll since January 2021.”

She added: “If Labour's vote continues to hold up, while Britain's Reform and Liberal Democrats eat into the Conservatives' support, Keir Starmer's party could be on course for a truly historic election victory. »
