GBI investigating officer-involved shooting in 4300 block of Ogeechee Road

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting with the Savannah Police Department (SPD) Monday evening in the 4300 block of Ogeechee Road.

An adult male was transported to Memorial Health University Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. Per SPD policy, the GBI was called and took over the investigation of the incident.

Any additional information regarding this case will be released by the GBI. According to a press release posted on the GBI website, the man, identified as Quayshon Whitehurst, 29, of Hinesville, Georgia, was shot and killed during the incident. No officers were injured, according to the GBI and SPD.

“Preliminary information indicates that around 7:20 p.m., Savannah Police Department officers responded to a report of a theft at Mary Jane's CBD dispensary at 4317 Ogeechee Road in Savannah,” the GBI press release states.

Whitehurst allegedly took a bookbag from a store employee and left the area. Officers found him behind the Circle K convenience store across the street from the dispensary on Ogeechee Road. After being confronted by an officer and asked to stop, “Whitehurst pulled out his gun and shot the officer,” the press release read. “The officer returned fire, hitting Whitehurst. Officers provided medical aid on scene before EMS personnel arrived.”

Whitehurst remains in stable condition.

According to the GBI press release, GBI agents charged Whitehurst with aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon guilty and obstruction of crime. SPD is working on the theft investigation.

The GBI will continue its independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting. Once the investigation is completed, it will be forwarded to the Eastern Judicial District Prosecutor's Office for review.

From January 2022 to June 2022, there were six police-involved shootings in Chatham County, according to a previous Savannah Morning News report. In an email, GBI spokeswoman Lindsay Smith said two of those cases remain open with the Chatham County Prosecutor's Office.
