Gardena gang member convicted in deadly 2020 shooting – Daily Breeze

A jury on Monday, July 1, convicted a 23-year-old convicted gang member of involvement in the fatal shooting of a Gardena man outside his family home nearly four years ago.

Justin Arteaga, aka “Hitta,” of Gardena, was convicted of one count of violent crime in aid of racketeering murder, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office.

On November 13, 2020, Evan Campbell and his brother were in a car parked outside their home along the 14400 block of Raymond Avenue when they were confronted by three men on foot, including Arteaga; Antonio Yanez, 26, aka “Tank”; and George Hernandez, aka “Lil Vampy.”

The men were members of the Gardena 13 street gang, which authorities say operates in several states under the control of the Mexican Mafia.

They asked where the brothers were from and said they were in gang territory, prosecutors said. Campbell got out of the car during the confrontation and one of the men lunged at him moments before all three men pulled out guns and shot him.

He was beaten 10 times and died in the street, prosecutors said.

Campbell's father heard the gunshots and came out of the house with a gun and exchanged gunfire with one of the suspects, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. George Hernandez, 33, was shot in the head and chest and died at a hospital a week later.

A fourth man, Jesus Hernandez — George's brother — did not join the other three in confronting the victims, but instead ran toward the gunfire to defend three of them and fired at least one shot at the victim's father, court documents show.

Yanez and Jesus Hernandez were arrested the night of the shooting.

Yanez pleaded guilty in February 2022 to felony violence in aid of racketeering, use and carrying of a firearm in furtherance of a felony of violence resulting in death, and possession of a firearm by a felon. He is expected to be sentenced in the coming months.

Jesus Hernandez pleaded guilty in May 2022 to one count of possession of a firearm and ammunition and is serving a nine-year prison sentence.

Arteaga was arrested four days after the shooting at Los Angeles International Airport, where he had been booked on a flight to Mexico.

He is scheduled to appear in court again for sentencing in September and faces a possible life sentence in federal prison.
