Galveston rip currents: Houston teen drowns, marking second death this weekend amid red flag warning

GALVESTON, Texas (KTRK) — Another person has died after being caught in Galveston's dangerous rip currents this holiday weekend, according to the Galveston Island Beach Patrol.

The video above is from a previous report.

Authorities say Yamileth Ramirez, 19, of Houston, was seen struggling in the water while body surfing around 6:30 a.m. Sunday.

Ramirez's brother and a passerby pulled her from the water on 76th Street and administered CPR, officials said.

She was transported to a nearby hospital where she later died, a beach patrol reported.

This is the second rip current-related death in Galveston waters this weekend.

The city raised a red flag due to high winds that caused deadly rip currents.

ABC13 was along Seawall Boulevard near 83rd Street Sunday evening as a teenage girl was being loaded into an ambulance.

She was pulled underwater but is expected to be OK.

Shannon Tucker was at the beach with his family when he noticed the girl struggling to breathe, and he jumped in to save her before seeking his own help.

“The lifeguard came and said, 'I don't know how you got out,'” Tucker said.

As rip currents continue to pose a danger, children and non-swimmers are advised to avoid entering the water, while adult swimmers are advised to remain in the waters until the size.
