GA Teen Had All 4 Limbs Amputated After Being Diagnosed With Strep Throat, Suffered Septic Shock – WSB-TV Channel 2

COWETA COUNTY, Ga. — A Coweta County teenager is celebrating her first birthday since her life changed.

Natalya Manhertz suffered from strep throat, but suffered septic shock and had all four limbs amputated.

“I had a sore throat and I do, not often but here and there,” Manhertz said.

It was May 2023, in the final days of her freshman year of high school, when she fell ill and her condition worsened.

“When I woke up that morning, I knew something was wrong,” Nat said. “I don’t even remember setting foot in the emergency room.”

Manhertz was airlifted to Children's Egleston.

She had tested positive for streptococcus, but also suffered from hypotension, her organs were failing and she suffered septic shock and then cardiac arrest.

“I woke up literally a month later,” Nat said.

When he woke up, his legs had been amputated. And soon, his arms would be gone too.

“I have my days. Every day is not easy,” Manhertz said.

But Nat was determined.

She left the hospital in October and was on a mission to return to school and finish her senior year.

A few months ago, she was crowned prom queen at Trinity Christian School. And earlier this month, a year and six days after falling ill, she graduated.

She attributes her success to her loving family, including her mother, friends and community.

“People will come up to me and say ‘oh my God, you don’t know me, but I know you, I prayed for you’.”

She also said part of her recovery was due to the nurses and doctors at Children's Egleston who became her family. They even threw him a second graduation party.

Nat is still learning how to use the new prosthetic hands she received last week. And she's ready to achieve her goals: public speaking and inspiring others.

“I still have a lot of life to live. I was given a second chance at life,” Nat said. “Don’t lose hope and confidence in yourself.”

Nat said she would get her prosthetic leg next. And finally, she will join her friends at university.
