Frio County Sheriff's Office promises aggressive, thorough investigation into how baby ended up on life support

As the rush to save the baby was underway, investigators returned to her home with a search warrant, looking for evidence.

SAN ANTONIO — The Frio County Sheriff's report on an injured Pearsall baby now on life support says the initial call for help came from a mobile home community on Nolan Road.

The report says a mother called 911 to say she was rushing her unconscious baby to a local hospital. As soon as 10-month-old Nylah Gonzales arrived at Frio Regional Hospital, investigators said a call was made to send the critically injured girl to San Antonio by helicopter for more intensive care.

But as the rush to save the baby was underway, investigators returned to her home with a search warrant, looking for evidence.

All they are admitting so far is that the mother's boyfriend, Deion Salazar, 28, was arrested and charged with drug possession after detectives said they found 100 grams of cocaine and other drugs already packaged for sale.

Jail records show Salazar was in and out of jail on bonds totaling $120,000 in less than 24 hours on two misdemeanor drug charges.

“It’s a very complicated investigation,” said Peter Salinas of the Frio County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO). “We need to make sure we’re very thorough.”

FCSO investigators said they are receiving assistance with the case from the Texas Rangers, but results may take time to come back.

“We are awaiting more information from the medical staff who have cared for the child so far. Once we have that information, it will kind of point us in the direction we need to go from here,” Salinas said.

Salinas said he promised the investigation into the baby's injuries would be aggressive and thorough.
