Fremont police identify knife-wielding suspect who was shot by officer

Fremont police have identified the suspect who was shot and killed by a police officer Sunday morning.

He was identified as Sean Patrick McMahan, 31, a resident of Fremont.

Around 9 a.m., police received a carjacking report in the parking lot of a store in the 4400 block of Osgood Road. The suspect was reportedly armed with a knife and had disappeared when police arrived on scene.

Police quickly found someone matching the suspect's description walking on Automall Parkway, west of Osgood Road.

The officer who found him made contact and told him to stop. However, the suspect continued walking and began to approach the officer while brandishing a knife.

According to Fremont police, the officer repeatedly asked the suspect to stop and attempted to create space between them. But the suspect continued and the officer shot him.

McMahan was hit once. He was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is in stable condition.

No officers were injured.

Police are still investigating and said they will forward the criminal charges to the prosecutor's office in the coming days.

Anyone who saw the shooting or has information about the incident is asked to call police at 510-790-6900.
