Four people arrested in death of University of Arizona student Erin Jones

TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – Four teenagers have been arrested in connection with the shooting death of University of Arizona student Erin Jones in April.

The Tucson Police Department said the following people were arrested.

  • Estevan Garcia, 18, was arrested June 14 and taken into custody near Midvale Park and Drexel.
  • Matthew Beale, 17, was arrested June 17 and taken into custody near East Golf Links Road and South Pantano Road.
  • Marcus Ian Williams, 17, was arrested June 17 and taken into custody in the 1800 block of West San Juan Trail.
  • Akeem Alvarez, 17, was arrested June 18 at a home in the 13000 block of East Mesquite Flat Springs Drive.

All four face murder and drive-by shooting charges.

Jones was fatally shot at an off-campus party on April 28. Three other people were also injured in the shooting, but survived.

TPD said the weapon used to kill Jones was also linked to aggravated assault.

“Thank you to the assistance of the TPD SWAT team and several community response teams for their work in safely apprehending four suspects in this homicide investigation,” TPD said in a statement.

Erin Jones, 20, was killed in a shooting at an off-campus party on Sunday, April 28.

TPD said detectives believe the suspects were going to the party to find and shoot another group of people who were unrelated to the University of Arizona students at the party.

According to investigators, there are still outstanding individuals related to this incident and detectives will continue to investigate.

“The Tucson Police Department expresses its gratitude for the assistance of the Pima County Prosecutor's Office: in particular, Major Crimes Bureau Chief Mark Hotchkiss, 88-Crime, the Federal Bureau of Investigations and the Department of University of Arizona Police,” TPD said in a statement. release. “We also extend our thanks to those members of the Tucson community who came forward with information, helping to advance the investigation.”
