Four people arrested in connection with $10,000 theft from San Mateo clothing store

SAN MATEO — Authorities arrested four Bay Area residents Thursday on suspicion of stealing nearly $10,000 worth of clothing from a Lululemon store in San Mateo.

The incident occurred shortly before 2 p.m. at Hillsdale Mall, San Mateo police said in a news release. Witnesses told police that three people grabbed the clothes and ran out of the store toward a white Subaru Outback that was waiting for them.

The Subaru then sped toward Highway 101, police said. Officers from a regional retail theft task force found the car traveling northbound on the highway and followed it to San Francisco.

When officers attempted to stop the car, the person driving fled and drove recklessly, police said. The police stopped the pursuit out of fear for other drivers and pedestrians in the area.

The Subaru was later found abandoned, but the four occupants were found a short time later. Police said stolen merchandise was found in the car and at the suspects' home.

The car was also reported stolen earlier in the day, police said.

The suspects – identified as a 32-year-old San Francisco resident, a 31-year-old Antioch resident, a 30-year-old San Francisco resident and a 27-year-old San Francisco resident – were arrested and booked into San Francisco . Mateo County Jail on criminal charges including organized retail theft, grand larceny and second-degree burglary.

The 30-year-old San Francisco man was also charged with taking a vehicle without the owner's consent, possession of a stolen vehicle and reckless fleeing.
