A former Roma police officer has surrendered to authorities after 13 years on the run.

Court records indicate Jose Omar Garcia was arrested Monday, June 3, at the Rome port of entry.

Garcia was initially arrested in September 2010 with six others in a marijuana trafficking scheme, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Texas.

Garcia and his brother – Roel Roberto Garcia – were Roma police officers who were charged with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute more than 2,200 pounds of marijuana between August 2006 and September 2010.

The suspects' father, Roel Garcia, was also arrested in connection with the investigation.

After the brothers were arrested, they posted bail and fled to Mexico, the San Antonio Express News reported.

On Monday, Garcia and his attorneys appeared in court. Garcia said his brother also plans to turn himself in, San Antonio Express News reported.

An arraignment hearing for Garcia has been set for Tuesday, June 11, in Houston, according to court records.

Garcia is currently out on bond.
