Former Prince George's Co. sheriff's deputy to serve 12 years in prison for rape

UPPER MARLBORO, Md.A former Prince George's County sheriff's deputy was sentenced Tuesday to 12 years in prison after being convicted of raping the mother of his child in her home.

According to court documents, in October 2022, Brandon Burroughs, 37, went to the victim's home and raped her in her bedroom after she asked him to leave. At the time, their one-year-old daughter was in another room.

The incident was captured on a home audio recording, which prosecutors used in court.

During the investigation, the Prince George's County State's Attorney's Office said Burroughs attempted to intimidate the victim into not reporting the assault by highlighting his ties to members law enforcement.

When questioned by police about the incident, he replied: “I know why I'm here – because she's angry, she's an afterthought and wants to be with me.” »

Corporal Burroughs had worked at the Prince George's County Sheriff's Office for 10 years before sexual assault allegations derailed his career. He was suspended without pay and fired Tuesday after being convicted of a felony.

“As law enforcement officers, we are sworn to uphold the law and protect the citizens of our county. Any member of our agency engaging in misconduct, whether while on duty or outside, will be held accountable for his actions,” Sheriff John said. The circuit court judge who presided over the sentencing said the case was troubling because the rape occurred at the victim's home, near her young daughter.

“We are pleased with this sentence above and believe it was appropriate under the circumstances presented in this case,” State Attorney Aisha Braveboy said. “Our office will continue to seek justice for all, without bias, and will work diligently to protect our victims.”
