Former NBA Player Delonte West Arrested for 2 Misdemeanors

Former NBA guard Delonte West was arrested and jailed early Thursday morning in Virginia on misdemeanor charges of violating conditions of his release and resisting arrest, according to local authorities.

West, 40, is being held at the Fairfax County Detention Center on $2,000 bail. He is expected to be arraigned Friday morning at 8:30 a.m. ET.

Fairfax County police spotted West around 1 a.m. in Groveton, Virginia, and sought to execute a warrant, police said. A chase ensued and officers found him unconscious after losing sight of him during the chase.

Narcan, which can be used to treat narcotics overdoses in an emergency, was initially administered to West and did not have the desired effect, according to police. West was then transported to a local hospital and Narcan worked after being administered a second time. West was released from the hospital and transported to the Fairfax County Detention Center.

West, who publicly discussed his bipolar disorder diagnosis during his NBA career, has struggled with substance abuse issues in recent years. He received treatment at a Florida drug rehabilitation center in 2021 and later ended up working there after former Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban helped him get his life back on track.

Cuban, who picked West up at a gas station in September 2020 after photos surfaced of West panhandling at an intersection in Dallas, was one of several people in the NBA who tried to help West at the time.

West averaged 9.7 points and 3.6 assists per game over eight NBA seasons while playing for the Boston Celtics, Seattle SuperSonics, Cleveland Cavaliers and Mavericks. He last played in 2011-12 with Dallas.
