Former NBA player Delonte West arrested after collapsing while fleeing cops: report

Former NBA point guard Delonte West suffered a medical emergency while trying to escape Virginia police who were trying to serve a warrant on him Thursday morning, according to a report. He reportedly collapsed and was discovered by police officers, hospitalized, then arrested for the offense of violating the conditions of his release and resisting arrest.

West, 40, “took off” when officers from the Fairfax County Police Department approached him, according to TMZ Sports. The tabloid reported that police chased him on foot, briefly losing sight of him, only to find him “unconscious” shortly after.

“Narcan was administered by officers,” the department told TMZ in a statement, “but [it] did not have the desired effect. He was transported to a local hospital and Narcan was administered again, which had the desired effect. West was released from the hospital and transported to [Fairfax County Detention Center].”

He remained in custody as of Thursday afternoon, according to online records. He is expected to appear in court Friday morning.

West last played for the Dallas Mavericks in 2012. During eight seasons in the NBA, he also played with the Boston Celtics, Seattle SuperSonics and Cleveland Cavaliers. He averaged 9.7 points and 3.6 assists per game, according to ESPN. He revealed that he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder during his time in the league.

He has struggled with substance abuse issues in recent years. In September 2020, after photos of West apparently panhandling at a Dallas intersection circulated online, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban picked him up at a gas station and took him to a rehabilitation center in Florida. Four months later, it was reported that West was working at the same facility.

But he wavered publicly later that year, turning up at a Florida police station belligerently drunk in October. He was eventually taken into custody after banging on the glass doors of the station and swearing loudly.

He was arrested again in Fairfax County in October 2022, after he was spotted trying to break into a car. He was jailed on four misdemeanor charges, records show.
