Former NBA and Cavs star arrested for 2 crimes in Virginia

Former NBA and Cleveland Cavaliers guard Delonte West was arrested Thursday in Virginia on misdemeanor charges of violating conditions of his release and resisting arrest, according to reports.

West, 40, is jailed at the Fairfax County Detention Center on $2,000 bail. The eight-year NBA veteran was scheduled to be arraigned Friday at 8:30 a.m. Eastern.

West was arrested in Groveton, Virginia, early Thursday morning after police attempted to serve him with a warrant. He fled the scene and a chase ensued, during which officers lost sight of West before finding him unconscious. Officers gave West Narcan, which is used to reverse a narcotics overdose in emergency situations, but it “did not have the desired effect,” officials said, according to WJLA7 News in Arlington. West was given Narcan a second time, which worked, and was transported to a local hospital before later being taken to the Fairfax County Detention Center.

This isn't the first time West has faced legal issues. In 2020, West attended a drug treatment program in Florida after a photo of him standing on the side of a road asking for money went viral. Earlier that year, videos circulated on social media showing West being physically assaulted in the street before being handcuffed.

West played eight seasons in the NBA from 2004 to 2012 after being drafted by the Boston Celtics in the first round of the 2004 NBA draft. After three seasons in Boston, he was traded to the Seattle Supersonics as part of a five-player trade that brought star guard Ray Allen to the Celtics.

After half a season with the Supersonics, he was traded to the Cavaliers in February 2008 as part of a massive three-team trade that brought him, Wally Szczerbiak, Ben Wallace and Joe Smith to the Cavaliers as backup behind the former Cavaliers superstar LeBron James. West played two and a half seasons with the Cavs and returned to Boston for the 2010-11 NBA season before playing one final season with the Dallas Mavericks in 2011-12.

During his career, West averaged 9.7 points, 3.6 assists and 2.9 rebounds per game in 27.4 minutes over 432 games, including 258 starts.
