Former NASCAR Winston Cup driver arrested for allegedly clashing with police during Jan. 6 Capitol riot

WASHINGTON (WGHP) — A former NASCAR Winston Cup driver has been arrested in connection with his alleged actions during the Jan. 6, 2021, breach of the U.S. Capitol, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Tighe John Scott, 75, of Pen Argyl, Pennsylvania, is one of four people charged in a criminal complaint filed in the District of Columbia.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says Tighe Scott had a confrontation with police on Jan. 6 and “physically struck riot shields and attempted to wrestle a riot shield from an officer's hands.” .

Tighe Scott is charged with:

  • Criminal obstruction of law enforcement during a civil disorder
  • Crime of assault, resistance or obstruction of certain agents
  • Offense of entering or remaining in a restricted building or grounds
  • Offense of disorderly or disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds
  • Offense of violence in a restricted building or grounds
  • Misdemeanor disorderly or disruptive conduct in a Capitol building or grounds
  • Violent offenses in the Capitol building or grounds

Court documents allege that Tighe Scott and the three other men – Scott Slater Sr., 56, Scott Alex Slater Jr., 26, and Jarret Carl Scott, 48, all of Saylorsburg, Pa. – entered the restricted grounds from the Capitol building in January. December 6, 2021, and “physically engaged” with police officers. The footage shows all four present at the “Stop the Steal” rally on Jan. 6 and shows them heading toward the Capitol building.

Tighe Scott is a former NASCAR Winston Cup Series driver who competed intermittently from 1976 to 1982.

His best result came in 1978, when he finished 13th in the final standings, according to ESPN. He earned $75,480 this season and had seven top-ten finishes.
