Former Jackson County auditor arrested by Indiana State Police

JACKSON COUNTY, Ind. — A former Jackson County auditor was arrested Friday by Indiana State Police.

According to a press release, Staci Eglen, 44, of Seymour, now faces numerous charges related to fraud, official misconduct and theft. His arrest followed a month-long investigation by Indiana State Police.

The ISP investigation began when the State Board of Accountability discovered potentially fraudulent activity conducted by Eglen.

During their investigation, State Police determined that Eglen had altered at least two checks issued to him by the Jackson County Treasurer's Office. Eglen was believed to be using the checks for business purposes as an employee of the Hamilton Township Trustee's office.

ISP reported that Eglen deposited the checks into his personal bank account, received cash in exchange and then made personal purchases with that money. Police believe Eglen illegally obtained more than $18,000 from the county.

According to a release, Eglen was previously charged with four counts of official misconduct, four counts of theft and two counts of fraud.

All charges Eglen faces are Level 6 felonies. The maximum penalty for a Level 6 felony in Indiana is a prison term of 2.5 years and a fine of up to $10,000.

ISP said Eglen resigned as Jackson County auditor shortly after state officials began investigating her fraudulent activity. She was booked into the Jackson County Jail after her arrest by police.

According to the Jackson County Jail log, Eglen's bond was set at $1,505.
