Former head of radiology department tried for alleged rape

The trial of the former head of the radiology department at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal, accused of collective sexual assault against a woman, began this week.

Stephan Probst, 46, allegedly sexually assaulted a young woman in his apartment in August 2020. Wendy Devera, 30, Probst's alleged accomplice, also faces charges.

The victim, whose name has been withheld for privacy reasons, told the court Thursday that she and Devera met on an online dating site. Although the victim was in a relationship with a man, she said she wanted to experiment sexually with a woman. She and Devera planned to meet at Probst's penthouse.

Before the meeting, the victim informed Devera that she was not interested in being with another man. Despite this communication, Probst was at the penthouse when she arrived. She said Probst made her a drink, while Devera offered her ecstasy, which she refused.

Although she refused the medication, she told the court she started feeling strange when she was at the spa with Devera, as if she had been drugged. The two men were soon joined by Probst, who attempted to physically engage with the victim. The victim said she pushed him away and went to another room to get dressed.

There, she said she started feeling worse, like she was unable to control her body. Devera helped lead her to the master bedroom, where the victim said Probst joined them and began raping her with Devera's help, according to local media reporting the case.

The victim told the court it took him several attempts to leave the penthouse on his own.

At the time of the incident, Probst was head of the radiology department and nuclear imaging division at the Jewish General Hospital. He is still listed online as head of nuclear imaging on the website of the Integrated University Health and Social Services Network of Central-West Montreal (CIUSSS Central-West Montreal).
