Father of drunk driving teen faces charges

What is the story

The father of a 17-year-old Pune teenager who drunkenly rode a Porsche on a bike, killing two people last week, now faces additional charges.

The city-based real estate mogul was charged with forgery, criminal conspiracy and destruction of evidence.

Previously charged under the Juvenile Justice Act for intentional neglect of his child, he was arrested while trying to escape police.

Why is this story important?

Early on Sunday morning, the minor, apparently intoxicated, drove a Porsche into two motorcycle-riding software engineers, Aneesh Awadhiya (24) and Ashwini Koshta (24), killing them both.

The case and the bail granted to the minor under the JJA sparked strong criticism and protests.

As part of the bail conditions, the minor was required to work with the Yerwada traffic police for 15 days and write an essay about the accident.

First investigation procedures, negative reactions

Pune police have filed a review petition with the Juvenile Justice Board, seeking to try the boy as an adult and review the May 19 order. On Tuesday, the boy's father, a prominent builder from Pune, was arrested. On Wednesday, the JJB revoked the 17-year-old's bail and held him in custody for 14 days, but refused to make a decision on whether he would be treated as an adult, amid widespread outrage.

Tycoon Arrest and Pending Court Appearance

The teenager's father is currently in jail till June 7 on charges of cheating for failing to pay the registration fee of ₹1,758 for the Porsche electric sports car involved in the incident.

The Pune crime branch, which has taken charge of all related cases, is expected to produce him before a district court.

As a reminder, he was arrested last Monday while on the run.

A grandfather arrested and accused of kidnapping

On Saturday, the grandfather of the 17-year-old boy from Pune was arrested.

The detention took place after the family's driver claimed the grandfather had wrongfully confined him and pressured him to accept responsibility for the accident.

Based on the driver's complaint, the Yerawada police registered a separate offense against the teenager's grandfather and father under sections 365 of the Indian Penal Code (kidnapping with intent to secretly and wrongfully confine a person) and 368 (concealment or unlawful detention of a person). .

Investigation into evidence tampering and protocol breaches

Separately, two doctors were also arrested for allegedly falsifying the teenager's blood test report.

Police have alleged evidence was tampered with at the boy's home and are investigating possible lapses in protocol following the incident.

The father's mobile phone, left at home to avoid being found, is now in the hands of the police and will be examined by an expert.
