Forest Service seeks return of missing historic military vehicle, asks public for help

PANGUICH U.S. Forest Service officials are seeking the public's help in locating a missing historic half-track military vehicle in the Dixie National Forest.

According to a USFS press release, the vehicle, built by White Motor Company, was removed from the Boulder Mountain Row Lakes area between Friday, June 21 and Saturday, June 22.

“The vehicle is part of a historic archaeological site deemed eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.“, indicates the press release.

The half-track was one of more than 15,400 manufactured for the Department of Defense between 1939 and 1943. The vehicle had wheels in the front and rubber tracks in the rear. It also had a white 160AX straight-six engine, according to the release.

The vehicle was carrying six people, including a shooter, a driver and a front passenger.

In the release, the Advanced Research Projects Agency stated the following: “The Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1979 strictly prohibits anyone from removing archaeological resources from federal lands. It also prohibits any sale, purchase, exchange, transportation or receipt of such resources.

Forest authorities are asking the public to understand the seriousness of the situation.
