Forest fires break out near Athens, warnings sent to residents

[Nikos Makris/Intime News]

Two new forest fires broke out near the Greek capital on Saturday afternoon, and firefighters rushed to put them out as strong winds fanned the flames.

The first fire occurred in the Katsimidi area, on Mount Parnitha, located on the northwest outskirts of Athens. Authorities are sending an emergency message to local residents to be on alert in case they need to evacuate.

Sixty firefighters, foot teams and 15 vehicles are on site, supported by five helicopters and two water bombers. Several volunteers and teams of hikers also participate in the operation.

To facilitate the fire service and protect the public, the police diverted traffic on Malakasa and Mercuriou streets, Ippokratous and Tyrtaiou streets, Tatoiou and Chlois streets, and at the Varybobi bridge.

In Aspropyrgos in western Attica, the fire was burning low-lying meadows, waste and dry vegetation, the fire service said.

Thirty firefighters, a foot team and two vehicles are present in the area, as well as a helicopter.

An emergency alert message 112 was sent at 14:30, asking residents of New Zoi to evacuate to Aspropyrgos. Police diverted traffic at the intersection of NATO and Aghia Sofia streets.
