Fond du Lac Sheriff's Office Participates in Operation Dry Water

While educating boaters, the Sheriff's Office will also take enforcement action if necessary.

FOND DU LAC – The Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Office will be out in force to educate people about boating safety when they head out on the water this holiday weekend.

Operation Dry Water is an annual national awareness and enforcement campaign regarding boating under the influence of alcohol, and raises awareness each year over three days: this year, it takes place from July 4 to 6.

The department joins the U.S. Coast Guard, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators and other agencies to increase awareness of the dangers of intoxicated boating, d alcohol or drugs, with the aim of reducing the number of related incidents and deaths on the water.

“As you prepare to travel our waterways, take the time to ensure the safety of yourself, those for whom you are responsible, and others traveling on the waterways,” the sheriff's office said in a statement Press.

Alcohol consumption is the leading known contributing factor to boater deaths and a leading contributor to boating accidents, according to the sheriff's office.

Alcohol and drugs, even some prescription medications, can impair a boater's judgment, balance, vision, and reaction time, and can increase fatigue and the effects of cold water immersion. Common boating environmental stressors, including sun, wind, noise, vibration, and motion, can also be intensified.

Under Wisconsin law, it is illegal to operate a recreational boat with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 or greater or with a detectable amount of a restricted controlled substance in your system.

While educating boaters, the Sheriff's Office will also take enforcement action if necessary.
