Flags fly at half-mast after mass shooting killing Minneapolis officer

MPD Officer Jamal Mitchell was killed while responding to a shooting that ultimately left three people dead and three injured Thursday.

MINNEAPOLIS — Gov. Tim Walz ordered Minnesota flags flown at half-staff Friday after a police officer and two other people died in a mass shooting in south Minneapolis Thursday evening.

The Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) said its squads responded to a report of a shooting at an apartment in the 2200 block of Blaisdell Avenue. Minneapolis police officer Jamal Mitchell was fatally shot after trying to provide medical assistance to victims. Another police officer and firefighter were injured in the incident while two men were shot inside the apartment – ​​one man died at the scene and another is hospitalized in “serious” condition .

The suspected shooter was among those who died at the scene, according to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA).

Mitchell had been on the MPD force for less than two years. He was recognized in February 2023 for helping save two elderly residents from a house fire. He told KARE 11 it was his third official day working the rescue.
