Firefighters make progress in containing Blue 2 Fire and Indios Fire

NEW MEXICO — Firefighters are making great progress in containing the Blue 2 Fire near Ruidoso and the Indios Fire in northern New Mexico.

The Blue 2 Fire is estimated at 7,532 acres and is approximately 77% contained. There are 399 people working with five crews, 14 engines, two helicopters, two bulldozers and five water tenders.

Firefighters were able to further contain the situation just south of Lake Bonito. A virtual public meeting is planned for Thursday, June 6 at 7:30 p.m. on the Blue 2 Fire Facebook page.

There is a risk of isolated storms in the afternoon. Better yet, officials are expecting more humidity, with higher humidity and daily storms. Lightning remains a concern. The fire is also producing very little smoke and all “Go” evacuation statuses are no longer in place.

Lightning started the fire May 16 eight miles north of Ruidoso.

Meanwhile, the Indios Fire is about 11,500 acres and the containment line is about 66% complete. 564 people are working on the fire.

Firefighters are focusing on repairs around the fire footprint, while also cleaning up and repairing disruptions caused by firefighting activity. They focused on the northwest area of ​​the fire by hand cutting branches, tree limbs and other “ladder fuels” that they believed could carry the fire from the ground to the tree canopy.

Officials say visible smoke is decreasing. Humidity will likely decrease through Thursday and then increase. On Thursday and the weekend, the risk of showers and storms will increase.

An Indios Fire open house will be held from 4-6 p.m. this Sunday in the Coronado High School conference room.
