Battery fire in basement of CHI Bergan Mercy closes emergency department

Omaha firefighters responded to a battery fire in the basement of CHI Health Bergan Mercy Hospital on Sunday. The medical center is located off 72nd Street and Mercy Road. The call came in shortly before 5:30 p.m. OFD says smoke was billowing into the emergency department. He was evacuated out of caution. Seven patients were in the emergency room at the time. No one was hurt. Firefighters say the fire is out. The hospital's emergency department is still closed. Authorities hope to reopen it within the next hour.
