Firefighters battle structure fire in Glendale – NBC Los Angeles

After several hours, nearly 100 firefighters extinguished a commercial building fire in Glendale on Sunday.

The fire was reported around 11:25 a.m. at the structure near Salem Street and San Fernando Road, according to a watch commander with the Glendale Police Department.

A Milla Party Rentals employee noticed the fire while picking up an order and heard something electrical pop and crackle.

“I was ready to pick up the order and then I heard like an electric, electrified noise and I came back to check and the chairs caught fire,” said Kevin Martinez, an employee at Milla Party Rentals.

The fire quickly spread to the neighboring costume supply business.

A fire captain was taken to hospital for possible heat exhaustion but is doing well, authorities said.

The Glendale Fire Chief said they tried to put out the fire from inside the building, but once it went through the roof, they had to retreat. Firefighters from four different stations were called in to help.

The fire occurred in an industrial area just east of the Los Angeles River. The fire caused a large plume of smoke visible in the Glendale and Burbank areas.

“The humidity is high because of the water around you, it saps your energy. And so what happens is we have about 15 minutes on a bottle, so you exhale the air from your bottle and it's time for you to go take a break, “said the chief of Glendale firefighters, Greg Fish. “We're calling in another team and that's why so many people have been affected by a fourth alarm. »

The investigation is looking into the causes of the fire.
