Firefighters battle 100-acre wildland fire in Otay Open Space Preserve: Boundary Fire 58

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Firefighters are battling a wildland fire Saturday that has grown to more than 100 acres in the Otay Open Space Preserve.

Firefighters from Cal Fire and San Diego Fire-Rescue worked to extinguish the vegetation fire that broke out around 3:15 p.m. Saturday in the Otay Open Space Preserve, north of Otay Truck Trail, near the US-Mexico border.

Cal Fire initially reported that the fire – dubbed the Border 58 Fire – was burning at 4 acres. This fire grew to 20 acres in just 10 minutes, with the potential to grow to 100 acres, Cal Fire said.

As of 4:15 p.m., the fire has spread to more than 100 acres and is burning in steep, rugged terrain in the Otay Open Space Wilderness, Cal Fire said in a video update on noted that the fire was burning at critical spread rates.

As of Cal Fire's 6 p.m. update, the Border 58 Fire had grown to 137 acres and was 5% contained.

Several air tankers are supporting the firefighters' ground efforts, with a total of 150 people working to fight the blaze.

At this time, no structures are threatened and no evacuations are underway, but the wildland fire is located near the George Bailey Detention Center and the Richard Donovan Correctional Facility.
