Firefighters battle 100-acre wildland fire in Otay Open Space Preserve: Boundary Fire 58

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Firefighters are battling a wildland fire that grew to more than 100 acres in the Otay Open Space Preserve Saturday afternoon.

Firefighters from Cal Fire and San Diego Fire-Rescue worked to extinguish the vegetation fire that started around 3:15 p.m. Saturday near the Otay Truck Trail in the Otay Open Space Preserve, near of the US-Mexico border.

Cal Fire initially reported that the fire – dubbed the Border 58 Fire – was burning at 4 acres. This fire grew to 20 acres in just 10 minutes, with the potential to grow to 100 acres, Cal Fire said.

As of 4:15 p.m., the fire has grown to more than 100 acres and is burning in steep, rugged terrain in the Otay Open Space Wilderness, Cal Fire said in a video update on X.

Multiple air tankers are supporting the firefighters' ground efforts, with additional air and ground resources ordered after the fire spread.

At this time, no structures are threatened and no evacuations are underway, but the wildland fire is located near the George Bailey Detention Center and the Richard Donovan Correctional Facility.
