Fire significantly damages parts of Christ Worship Center Church

The pastor had encouraging words for the congregation after the destructive fire.

GASTONIA, N.C. — A fire broke out at the Church of Christ Worship Center in Gaston County late on Memorial Day.

According to church officials, Gastonia Fire responded to the scene around 10 p.m.

The church's priest said the church's cafe and lobby were significantly damaged by the flames.

“The nursery as well as parts of the children's wing suffered water and smoke damage,” the church posted on the Facebook page. “The main sanctuary suffered smoke damage and other parts of the building also suffered smoke damage.”

The pastor said it was not known at this time how extensive the damage was, but they said no one was allowed into the building for safety reasons.

“We are very grateful that no one was in the building at the time of the fire,” the pastor said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Gastonia Fire Department. The pastor had encouraging words for the congregation after the fire.

“Remember that it is not the building that makes the church, but the people of God,” the pastor wrote. “YOU ARE THE CHURCH and the gates of Hell cannot prevail against HIS CHURCH. God is still at work even during this most difficult time. Please pray for one another.”
