PARKERSBURG — At 8:52 a.m. Wednesday, a structure fire was reported on 16th Street in Parkersburg.

When Parkersburg firefighters arrived on scene at 8:55 a.m., they discovered there was a fire at the rear of the home at 2235 16th St.

According to Fire Capt. John Geary, although there were no injuries, the fire caused significant damage to the home.

“The damage was quite significant” Geary explained.

Geary noted that the fire damage was to the rear of the house, there was smoke and water damage throughout the house, as the fire damaged the laundry rooms of the house.

Geary noted that the fire started outside the back porch and that the likely cause was discarded smoking equipment.

According to Geary, two occupants of the home were inside when it caught fire. In addition to the two occupants, Geary noted there were two dogs and four to five puppies.

In an interview, Geary said passersby walked past the house the morning of the fire and knocked on the door to alert the occupants. The occupants removed the puppies from the house and firefighters were able to locate the two dogs. Geary noted that neither occupant nor the animals were injured, but the dogs needed oxygen after being rescued from the home.

“It went pretty well.” Geary said.

Geary said the fire was under control by 9:13 a.m. Geary also noted that none of the first responders were injured. Geary said the fire department had 15 officers, a training officer and three new recruits on scene.
