Fire Restrictions Now in Effect in Southern Nevada

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — As temperatures rise across Southern Nevada, several agencies now have fire restrictions in effect.

This includes the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation, Clark County, Moapa Valley Fire Protection District, Mesquite Fire Rescue, California Fire Protection District Mount Charleston, National Park Service, Nevada Division of Forestry, Nye County, US Fish. and Wildlife and the USDA Forest Service.

Phase I fire restrictions include:

  • It is prohibited to light, construct, maintain, assist or use an open fire of any kind. The only exception is campfires in fire pits and approved grills provided for developed recreational sites. Flame-controlled devices such as portable stoves and lanterns with shut-off valves, using gas, gasoline jelly or pressurized liquid fuel are permitted.
  • Smoking is prohibited except in an enclosed vehicle or camper trailer, or while stationary or standing in a three-foot diameter area free of any flammable materials.
  • It is prohibited to drive or park a vehicle or other motorized equipment over dried or dried vegetation.
  • Any hot work involving electric or gas welding, cutting, brazing or similar operations producing flames or sparks is prohibited.

Several agencies have implemented additional restrictions, which you can view below.
BLM, Southern Nevada District Fire Restrictions Year Round

  • It is prohibited to possess, discharge, use or permit the use of fireworks, pyrotechnic or incendiary devices.
  • Possess, discharge, ignite or cause burn; explosives or explosive materials, including binary explosive targets, are prohibited.
  • It is prohibited to discharge a firearm using tracer, incendiary or steel component ammunition.

Nevada Division of Forestry

  • In Nevada State Parks, park staff may or may not allow campfires on a daily basis depending on current local weather conditions. During Red Flag Warnings or other weather events, park staff may post signs indicating that campfires are not permitted.

Nye County

  • No firing of fireworks, pyrotechnics or incendiary devices.

Pahrump

  • Property owners must obtain a burning permit during the burning season at 300 North Highway 160.
  • The moratorium on burning runs from May 15 to November 1. No burning is permitted during this period.

There are some exceptions to fire restrictions.
For example, Clark County allows small fires for religious or ceremonial purposes, for cooking and for keeping warm, as long as they do not become a public nuisance. They add that any burning must be controlled so that public nuisance or traffic hazards are not created due to air contaminants emitted.

In Lake Mead National Recreation Area, wood or charcoal fires are permitted on barbecue grills in developed picnic areas and campgrounds where a guest is present. They are also permitted on shore where natural vegetation is at least 100 feet from shore. Barbecues are also permitted on private boats outside of Lake Mead and Lake Mohave harbors. Charter boats are permitted to use barbecue grills attached to the vessel, if permitted by the boat rental agreement. All barbecue fires on vessels must be located at least 100 feet from shoreline vegetation.

The fire prevention order is expected to remain in effect until Dec. 31, 2024, unless agencies decide to rescind it sooner.

Agencies recommend having a shovel, fire extinguisher and/or at least five gallons of water on hand in case of an accidental fire.
