Fire in Worcester, Mass. destroys building – NBC Boston

A massive fire ripped through an apartment building in Worcester, Massachusetts early Tuesday morning.

The fire happened around 2:30 a.m. on Outlook Drive, the Worcester Fire Department said. At least two people trapped inside had to be rescued.

Video taken by a neighbor who escaped the fire shows a man and woman trapped on the third floor of the building, with flames raging all around them.

Worcester police responded before firefighters arrived on the scene – and at least one neighbor was prevented from trying to get inside and save the trapped couple.

Witnesses told NBC10 Boston that once firefighters arrived, they were able to set up ladders and reach the two trapped people.

But residents of both buildings spread this fire to describe a frightening scene escaping the flames.

“I hear screams next door, because the apartment that burned is right next to mine. So we went down and when we came down, there was a woman there where the fire started. , she was screaming for help. I don't know if other people managed to get out of the apartment or not,” said Jesilia Molina, who escaped the fire.

Both people were taken to hospital, firefighters said. The extent of their injuries is unknown.

Worcester Fire Chief Martin Dyer said that after rescuing the couple, they were able to evacuate the apartment and then continued their exterior attack.

Water became a problem at one point because it is a very large complex, located on a hill on Mill Street and with the size of the fires, they had a “ring water” problem. “, but they managed to get away with it.

Dyer said the fire spread to three buildings, but it appears the fire started in the third-floor apartment where they rescued the couple.

He said dozens of people had been displaced.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
