Fire damages 15 boats at Lake Mead National Recreation Area – St George News

BOULDER CITY, Nev. — National Park Service officials reported in a news release that a fire broke out in Lake Mead National Recreation Area shortly after midnight.

The incident occurred when the fire started at the Las Vegas Boat Harbor Marina around 12:30 a.m. Sunday morning.

“Interagency personnel responded immediately to extinguish the fire and it was contained within a few hours,” National Park Service public affairs said. “Authorities are currently investigating the cause. Around 15 boats were damaged or destroyed by the fire.

Boat owners whose vehicles may be damaged have already been notified of the damage by Las Vegas Boat Harbor marina staff.

Although the marina remains open to the public, park officials have ordered a partial closure of the port's R and I docks as the investigation remains ongoing.

“Visitors should use caution when accessing Hemenway Harbor and open portions of the Las Vegas Marina due to potential safety concerns,” the press release continues. “The staff at Lake Mead National Recreation Area would like to thank all of the interagency personnel who came together to extinguish the fire.”
