Fire burns restaurant and martial arts studio in Castleton Corners on Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The FDNY battled a fire Monday evening at a commercial building in Castleton Corners.

Island Coffee Shop and Double Dragon Martial Arts Academy were among the businesses that suffered damage in the fire at 407 Manor Road, near Utter Avenue.

The fire was started at 10:53 p.m. at the cafe in the 100-foot by 50-foot one-story building, according to an FDNY/EMS spokesperson.

A total of 12 units and about 60 firefighters responded and brought the fire under control “with all hands” in about half an hour, at 11:21 p.m., the FDNY spokesperson said.

No injuries were reported in the fire, the cause of which remains under investigation, the FDNY spokesperson said.

Photos from the scene show a large number of firefighters inside and outside the restaurant during the emergency response. Glass is broken on the large bay windows where potted plants remain on the ledges inside the restaurant.

Some windows and doors at the restaurant and martial arts studio were closed Tuesday morning.
