Fire Breaks Out Near Hopland, Threatens Structures

A vegetation fire, dubbed the Grade Fire, has broken out east of Hopland along State Route 175, according to local authorities.

The fire started in the 8400 block of Highway 175 and, according to the incident commander, is one acre in size and threatening multiple structures. The fire is spreading at a moderate rate and has moderate potential to expand. Air and ground firefighting resources are converging on the area.

Eyewitnesses, including this reporter, observed a large column of smoke rising from the area. Several fire surveillance cameras on the mountaintops also provide a clear view of the smoke.


UPDATE 6:31 p.m.: The incident commander instructed the dispatcher to contact the California Highway Patrol to begin the process of closing State Route 175 due to the fire.


UPDATE 6:45 p.m.: The incident commander said the fire was between 1.5 and 2 acres in size.
