The state agency's Sonoma-Lake-Napa unit was called to the landfill at 4380 Silverado Trail North around 12:40 a.m., Cal Fire said in a Facebook post. Firefighters found a trommel screen, a device that separates different materials, on fire and the flames spread to a compost pile, according to the agency.

Fire crews extinguished the flames while a landfill employee used a front loader to separate the compost pile from the fire, Cal Fire said. No damage to buildings was reported or any spread of the fire to wildlands, according to the agency.

Members of the St. Helena and Calistoga fire departments assisted Cal Fire, according to the release.
