Fire at NE Harris County recycling facility extinguished, 5 total firefighters hospitalized during incident

HARRIS COUNTY, TX – After hours of burning, a fire at a recycling facility in northeast Harris County has been extinguished.

The fire occurred at Prestige Auto and Metal Recycling, located at 7615 East Mount Houston Road. It was first reported around 2 p.m. on Saturday.

The Eastex Fire Department said they, along with 14 other agencies from Harris, Fort Bend and Montgomery County, worked through the night to put out the fire.

Around 4 a.m. Sunday, all mutual aid was released and Eastex firefighters worked to monitor hot spots and sort through scrap metal.

At 7 a.m., the services cleared the scene.

“During the incident, 6 firefighters and 1 civilian were evaluated for heat-related issues, 4 firefighters and the civilian were transported to the hospital, treated and released, 1 firefighter was admitted for further evaluation thorough,” said the firefighters.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation and the department said the fire could last for several days.

“We would like to express our gratitude to all of our mutual aid partners and crane operators who worked the nearly 20-hour incident. Additionally, thank you to Metro for sending a requested bus for a cooling area for firefighters undergoing rehabilitation,” the department said.
