Fire and HAZMAT situation reported in West Toledo

Crews closed Hill Avenue in both directions due to the incident.

TOLEDO, Ohio — Multiple crews responded to a fire and hazardous materials situation at a west Toledo business Wednesday morning.

Emergency crews from Toledo Fire and Rescue responded to the 2900 block of Hill Avenue after 9 a.m. regarding a fire at DPI Inc., a wallboard company.

Crews then closed Hill Avenue in both directions near the building.

A Toledo Fire and Rescue spokesperson said employees were separating chemicals when a reaction caused a small fire. Haze and smoke from the fire created a HAZMAT situation.

Toledo Fire says no one was seriously injured. Crews treated four people for headaches caused by the fumes. They also decontaminated some employees, according to standard ministry protocol.

HAZMAT crews removed the chemicals from the building and were working with DPI to safely transport them from the scene at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The Toledo DPI Inc. plant was scheduled to close all operations Friday, according to a news release, which cited “recent financial challenges” as the reason for closing the facility. According to a document announcing the closure, 76 people were working at the Toledo plant when the layoffs were announced.
