Fayetteville man jailed for fatal assault Friday on Reilly Road

A fatal stabbing last week on South Reilly Road was the result of a fight between two Fayetteville men, during which one claimed someone was trying to rob him, documents show judicial.

Albert David Smith, 56, of Glen Reilly Road, is charged with first-degree murder in the killing of Anthony Powell, 30, of Edgewood Loop.

According to an arrest warrant, a witness told Fayetteville police that around 1 p.m. on June 21, he saw two men, one dressed in red and the other shirtless and wearing camouflage pants, walking arguing in the 700 block of South Reilly Road.

The witness said he heard one of the men say, “He was trying to rob me,” before a fight broke out. The man in camouflage pants, the witness said, hit the man in red with a cane, then pulled out a folding knife and stabbed him multiple times, according to the court report.

The witness said he was only 10 feet from the two men when the incident happened.

Powell was stabbed three times in the chest and died the same day at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, the records show.

According to the filing, police were searching for the attacker when Smith, shirtless and wearing camouflage pants, was seen entering his home in the 800 block of Glen Reilly Drive, less than a mile from the scene of the stabbing.

Shortly afterward, Smith came out of the house and sat on the porch with what appeared to be an ice pack on his hand, when he was immediately arrested. The court records state that the witness positively identified him as the attacker.

The knife used in the assault was found at the scene, the warrant said.

Smith is being held in the Cumberland County Jail with bail set at $750,000, jail records show.
