Fayetteville crash near Cross Creek Mall turns deadly

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) — A man died Monday after a car crash in Fayetteville late last week, police said Tuesday.

Officers said the wreck was reported shortly after 6 p.m. Friday in the 100 block of South McPherson Church Road at West Wood Shopping Plaza, near Cross Creek Mall and Morganton Road.

Police said the crash happened as a man was driving a 2024 Chevrolet and making a left turn from South McPherson Church Road toward the mall, according to a news release from the Fayetteville Police Department.

As the driver of the Chevrolet was turning left, his car was struck by the driver of a 2018 Toyota Camry, the release said.

Police said the driver of the Chevrolet, Richard Craven, failed to yield in the crash.

Craven, 71, was transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. On Monday, police announced Craven's death.

So far, no charges have been filed, but police said it is an “active investigation.”
