Father and teenage son drown in Virginia lake, authorities say – WPXI

LOUISA COUNTY, Va. — A man and his 14-year-old son died Saturday after drowning in a Virginia lake, authorities said.

According to a press release from the Louisa County Sheriff's Office, both victims were visitors from out of state. Deputies received a call around 1:10 p.m. EDT regarding the drowning of a child.

“During the drive, officers were informed that the child’s father attempted to locate/rescue his son,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “It was reported that witnesses observed the father struggling, just before losing sight of him as well. Several people jumped into the water to try to locate them, but without success.

Divers from the Sheriff's Office, Mineral Volunteer Fire Department, Lake Anna Rescue Team, Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources and Spotsylvania County Fire and Rescue helped locate and recovering the two bodies, the Daily Progress reported.

Both men were pronounced dead at the scene and transported to the medical examiner's office in Richmond, according to the newspaper.

The identities of the two victims have not been released pending notification of next of kin, according to WTTG-TV.

Authorities do not believe foul play was involved, WRIC-TV reported.

An investigation is underway, according to the sheriff's office.

Lake Anna is about 66 miles northwest of Richmond.
