Father and son among three men killed

The Hamilton County Coroner's Office has identified the three men killed in a mass shooting in Corryville early Monday.

Coroner's office records list Shawn McDaniel Sr., 44, Shawn McDaniel Jr., 22, and Laurenz Nixon, 21, as those killed in the shooting that also left another person wounded. Police said the McDaniels are father and son.

The shooting happened around 2:50 a.m. Officers were patrolling the area when they heard several gunshots nearby, according to Cincinnati police Capt. Mark Burns. Police initially said five people were shot in the area of Highland and East University avenues, but later determined that a gunshot victim who “self-transported” to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center was not involved in the incident.

Ronald Caulton, 75, who lives nearby on Donahue Avenue, told the Enquirer he heard “four loud explosions,” followed by the sound of 10 more gunshots.

Police found four male victims, one of whom was dead, Burns said. He said the other three were taken to a nearby hospital. McDaniel Sr. and Nixon died there, according to coroner's reports.

Burns said an officer saw someone enter a home with a gun. That person eventually came out voluntarily and was taken into custody. Police have not yet said whether that person is suspected of being the shooter, or what led to the violence.

Police are urging anyone with information about the shooting to contact Crime Stoppers at 513-352-3040.
