Fatal train accident involving a 17-year-old on a bicycle; Pacific Surfliner and COASTER services impacted

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — First responders and deputies responded to reports of a fatal train crash in San Diego Friday afternoon. The victim was confirmed to be 17 years old.

San Diego County Sheriff's Office deputies are investigating a fatal train-pedestrian crash that occurred at 12:34 a.m. Friday in the University City/Sorrento Valley area.

A spokesperson for the LOSSAN Rail Corridor Agency told FOX 5/KUSI the accident involved a southbound Amtrak Pacific Surfliner train and a juvenile on a bicycle.

The crash occurred at the intersection with Sorrento Valley Blvd and Sorrento Valley Road near Roselle Street at the end of I-805 in the City of San Diego.

The sheriff's office said in an update Friday evening that witnesses at the scene told officers that three boys were riding their bikes and stopped at the crossing to allow the northbound train to pass. After the northbound train passed, the 17-year-old cycled across the tracks without realizing that there was also a southbound train passing.

The sheriff's office says he was struck by the train and did not survive his injuries. The other two cyclists were not injured.

Officials were seen removing parts of the twisted and mangled bike from the railway tracks. The victim's parents were also there shortly after the accident.

SkyFOX was above the scene immediately after the crash and showed police the traffic around the scene.

Pacific Surfliner and COASTER services have been impacted while train tracks were closed and law enforcement investigated.

San Diego police called in the sheriff's Transit Enforcement Unit (TEU) to investigate the crash.

The sheriff's office said the medical examiner's office will identify the victim and determine the cause and manner of his death, pending notification of his family.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the Sheriff's Department's non-emergency line at 858-565-5200.
