Fatal shooting in Haverstraw under investigation near Fairmount Avenue

HAVERSTRAW — Police were investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Monday in the area of West Street and Fairmount Avenue.

The person hit by the bullets died at the scene, Police Chief John Gould said.

No details were provided as police investigators worked the scene.

“We are in the early stages of the investigation, attempting to interview witnesses and locate surveillance video of the incident,” Gould said.

The shooting marked the second death since Gould became chief less than a week ago. A 13-year-old Pomona boy died Wednesday afternoon when a car struck him while he was riding his bike in what Gould called a tragic accident.

Police were reportedly searching for at least one man after the shooting. Officers closed both roads. Haverstraw Ambulance Corps medics responded.

Monday’s shooting marked Rockland’s third homicide of 2024. The others occurred in Stony Point, Spring Valley and Ramapo. Rockland police have investigated four homicides in 2023.
