Fatal Queens fire: Man, 57, killed in South Ozone Park apartment fire

SOUTH OZONE PARK (WABC) — The FDNY says a 57-year-old man has died after a fire broke out at his Queens apartment building.

The fatal fire occurred in the South Ozone Park section around 12:30 Saturday morning.

Video from the Citizen app shows heavy flames and smoke coming from the structure on 133rd Street.

An Uber driver said he was driving by, saw the flames and jumped out of his car to help a dog inside.

“It appears the dog had difficulty breathing and a back injury,” the driver told Eyewitness News. “I have dogs myself. I have five dogs. I would like someone to do this for my dog if I'm not here.”

After an initial investigation into the fire, authorities believe the flames started in the victim's kitchen.

At this time, the FDNY is not considering the fire suspicious.
