Fatal fire in Georgetown, woman dead – NBC Boston

A woman is dead after a fire in Georgetown, Massachusetts, Saturday evening.

The Georgetown fire chief said 20-foot flames were shooting through the roof of the single-family home when firefighters arrived shortly before 11 p.m.

Four people were inside the East Main Street home when the fire broke out, three of them were able to get out safely.

Firefighters had to rescue a seriously injured woman trapped on the second floor.

The woman was rushed to Anna Jacques Hospital in Newburyport and was later pronounced dead.

“We ended up withdrawing crews after the emergency responders were put in a defensive position and continued to fight the fire that way,” Fire Chief Brian Coolidge said. “We had a few collapses in the building. It wasn't worth risking our firefighters for more collapses.

Firefighters from more than a dozen surrounding towns were called to help contain the rapidly growing fire, finally bringing it under control shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday.

East Main Street is still closed in both directions, from Tenney Street to True Lane.

The house was declared a total loss. The investigation is looking into the causes of the fire.
