Fatal crash during New York's Fourth of July celebrations leaves 3 dead, 9 injured by suspected drunk driver

Horror struck a crowd of pedestrians during the Fourth of July festivities in New York City. An alleged drunk driver plowed into the crowd. Reports indicate that at least three people died and several others were injured in the tragic incident. According to sources, the victims included a mother and her two young children. The report also states that two women and a man succumbed to their injuries.

Witnesses described the horrific scene, with some expressing trauma by saying they “couldn’t stop screaming.” A moment of chaos erupted in Corlears Hook Park when a gray Ford F-150 truck swerved out of its lane. Police reports say the car slammed into the intersection of Water Street and Jackson Street, jumped the curb and crashed into the park where families were celebrating the Fourth of July.

According to the NY POST, a local resident who was at the park with his family described the tragic incident to police, saying the victims, who were hit by the car, were enjoying a barbecue near the bleachers of the baseball field. The location is directly across from a stop sign where the gray truck reportedly exploded around 9 p.m., before colliding with the crowd. First responders quickly arrived on the scene and discovered four people trapped underneath the truck.

Several victims were taken to hospital

According to NBC New York, several injured people were rushed to a nearby hospital after the team arrived and helped lift the truck to quickly evacuate the trapped people. Sadly, at least three people died from their injuries, as reported by senior law enforcement officials. The driver appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, as stated by New York Police Department Chief Jeff Maddrey.

Witnesses at the scene quickly mobilized to grab the truck driver, remove him from the car and prevent him from escaping until authorities arrived. The ages of the victims injured and killed in the crash have not yet been released, but Maddrey said two of them were young children.
