Fatal apartment fire in Jackson Township

CLEVELAND — One person is dead after a fire ripped through a three-unit apartment building in Stark County.

According to the Jackson Township Fire Department, the fire occurred around 9:45 p.m. Saturday at an apartment building on Harris Avenue Northwest in the township.

“Our hearts go out to the family who lost a loved one today,” Jackson Fire Chief Tim Berczik said in a news release posted on social media. “We want to urge all of our residents to have working smoke detectors on all levels of your home and if you hear these alarms sounding, please go outside, stay outside and close the doors when going out.

A 9-1-1 caller reported the fire and informed dispatchers that a person was still inside the building. Firefighters said firefighters arrived and saw flames “coming out of a door and window.”

Firefighters quickly brought the fire under control while “simultaneously” recovering the person inside. The victim was taken to hospital.

The Ohio Division of State Fire Marshal, Jackson Police and Fire Department are working together to investigate the fire.
