LAKEVILLE, Minnesota — Faribault man charged with He shot and killed his colleague in an Amazon distribution center in Lakeville early Saturday morning.

The 24-year-old suspect is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Ahmed Ibrahim Cariif, 22, according to a complaint filed Tuesday in Dakota County.

Lakeville police said officers responded to a shooting in the parking lot of 9800 217th Street West shortly after 4 a.m. When they arrived, they found a man with a suspected gunshot wound. Although officers provided medical treatment, he died at the scene.

According to the charges, Cariif, the suspect and a third man drove to work together in Faribault. The suspect, who had a gun permit, brought his gun and left it in the car while he worked.

During a break around 1 a.m., the suspect noticed that the flashlight on his gun was missing, according to the complaint. He allegedly accused the two other men of stealing it.

The men returned to the car at 4 a.m. to look for the attachment, the charges state. The suspect continued to accuse the men of theft when he became involved in a physical altercation with Cariif.

During the altercation, the suspect allegedly pulled out his gun and Cariif attempted to wrestle it from his hands. The suspect fired, hitting a nearby vehicle. The two other men yelled at him not to shoot, but he fired again, hitting Cariif.

According to the charges, the suspect told police that Cariif had instigated the fight and that he shot him in self-defense. However, police say surveillance video of the altercation shows the suspect throwing the first punch. The complaint states that the suspect may have retreated multiple times.

The suspect called 911 to report the shooting and police arrested him without incident. His bail was set at $1 million with conditions.

His next court appearance is scheduled for July 15.
