The mother of an Indigenous woman accused of murdering her ex-boyfriend has claimed her daughter suffered a series of domestic violence attacks before the alleged tragedy.

Nikita Kirby, 31, was arrested near her sister's home in Matraville, in Sydney's eastern suburbs, on Tuesday evening after emergency services were called at around 6.15pm.

Moments earlier, her ex-boyfriend Scott Wallace, 37, was found suffering from stab wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

“All our lives have been a rollercoaster of domestic violence,” Ruth Kirby, Nikita’s mother, told Waverley Local Court on Thursday morning.

“And Nikita put up with it for a long time.”

Nikita Kirby was arrested near her home in Matraville, in Sydney's eastern suburbs, on Tuesday evening.
In 2021, an AVO was lodged in the NSW Local Court against Scott Wallace (pictured) by police, for the protection of Ms Kirby.

Ms Kirby said she feared her daughter would be stabbed by her ex-lover.

“She had bruises everywhere,” she said. “She’s a mess. We are all.

“He hit her and she had bruises everywhere. Does a woman deserve this or should she put up with it? She doesn't deserve this.

“He was told not to go and he went anyway.”

Ms Kirby said the family had already suffered tragic heartbreak this year when her niece was murdered.

“These things still happen to us,” she said.

“We’re going through a lot.”

Kirby, 31, was charged with murder (domestic violence) on Wednesday and was refused bail and failed to appear at Waverley Local Court on Thursday.

She was supported by her friends and family.

According to friends, the mother-of-one was in an on-and-off relationship with Wallace, who had a long history of drug and alcohol abuse.

As of Wednesday morning, the one-story brick house in Matraville remained a crime scene

In 2021, an AVO was issued against Mr Wallace by police for the protection of Ms Kirby. This AVO lasted two years and ended in October last year.

As of Wednesday morning, the single-storey brick house remained a crime scene with officers from Eastern Beaches Police Area Command and the State Crime Command's homicide squad, as well as forensic officers investigating.

Residents of Murrabin Avenue told Daily Mail Australia they saw a woman running down the cul-de-sac following the stabbing.

“She was running down the street screaming,” one resident said.

“It’s a quiet, family street, we are shocked this has happened on our doorstep.”

A local business owner said he saw the two men arguing outside the Matraville hotel earlier in the afternoon.

The case was adjourned until August 6 at the Downing Centre.
