Family speaks out on resumption of search for missing SC tubers on Monday

CROSS HILL, S.C. (WSPA) — The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources has suspended the search for a missing woman at Greenwood Lake until Monday.

Authorities are searching for Porsha Griffin, 30, who was tubing behind a boat Saturday afternoon but fell. She has not been seen since.

SCDNR searched Greenwood Lake all day Sunday.

The search for a missing woman who sank while tubing at Greenwood Lake has been suspended until Monday, May 27.

“The search required numerous dives and the use of sonar and will resume Monday morning,” SCDNR said. on X.

Griffin's family said the Columbia native and a friend were plunged into Lake Greenwood when the tube overturned.

Griffin's friend told her family that she was wobbling and losing consciousness and that the moments after hitting the water were blurry because “she was drowning and trying to fight for her life.”

Griffin's aunt said no one on the tube wore a life jacket, but both women knew how to swim. The friend told her family she thought it was a “random” event that the tube overturned and described the water on Saturday as choppy.

The aunt added that the friend did not believe the boat had hit anything or that there was a problem with the tube or line.

Two tents were set up Sunday by Griffin's friends and family to huddle in while awaiting updates from search teams.

“[Griffin] was full of life and a woman who loved faith,” her aunt said. “She brought us joy.”

The family said Griffin was an active member of the South Carolina National Guard, a registered nurse and the mother of a nine-year-old daughter.

SCDNR said officers, investigators and divers continued the search at Lake Greenwood on Sunday, but called off the search around 8 p.m.
